Understanding Exchange Rates
Exchange rates are quoted as the price of one currency in terms of another. EUR/USD = 1.08 means 1 Euro costs 1.08 US Dollars. Rates fluctuate continuously based on interest rates, inflation, economic data, and market sentiment.
The rate shown in our converter is the mid-market rate โ the midpoint between the buy and sell prices. Banks and exchange services add a margin (typically 1โ5%) on top of the mid-market rate. This is why the rate you get from a bank or exchange counter is always worse than the rate you see on a currency converter.
Getting the Best Exchange Rate
- Credit cards with no foreign transaction fees typically offer rates close to the mid-market rate (Chase Sapphire, Charles Schwab debit card). Best option for most international travelers.
- Bank ATMs in your destination country generally offer better rates than airport exchange counters. Use a bank-branded ATM rather than independent machines which often charge high fees.
- Airport currency exchange counters typically offer the worst rates โ often 8โ15% worse than mid-market. Avoid exchanging large amounts at airports.
- Wise (formerly TransferWise) offers close to mid-market rates for international money transfers, with transparent low fees.
Currency and Travel Planning
Use our converter before traveling to understand your purchasing power at the destination. If 1 USD = 130 JPY, a 1,000 yen lunch costs about $7.70. If 1 USD = 0.92 EUR, a โฌ50 museum ticket costs about $54. Checking conversions in advance prevents budget surprises.

How often are exchange rates updated?
Our rates are updated regularly throughout the day. For exact real-time rates for large financial transactions, always check with your bank or a financial services provider directly.
What is a mid-market rate?
The mid-market rate (also called the interbank rate) is the midpoint between the rates at which banks buy and sell currency. It's the "true" exchange rate you see on financial sites. Banks, exchange bureaus, and payment services add a markup on top of this rate to make their profit.
Why is the rate at my bank different from the converter?
Banks add a margin (typically 1โ5% for retail customers) on top of the mid-market rate. A 3% margin on $1,000 means you lose $30 to the exchange rate alone. Using a no-foreign-transaction-fee card or a service like Wise significantly reduces this cost.
