How Carriers Calculate Shipping Rates
Three factors determine your shipping cost:
- Shipping zone: The distance band between origin and destination. Zone 1 (nearby) costs far less than Zone 8 (coast-to-coast). The zone difference can mean 2–3× price for the same package.
- Billable weight: You pay for whichever is greater — actual weight or dimensional weight.
- Service level: Ground, 2-Day, Next Day. Faster service means higher cost.
Dimensional (DIM) Weight Explained
DIM weight was introduced by carriers because large, lightweight packages take up space in trucks and planes that could carry heavier items. You're billed for whichever is greater: actual weight or DIM weight.
International DIM Weight (kg) = Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 5,000
DIM Weight Example
A 20" × 16" × 12" box containing a 3 lb item:
DIM weight = 20 × 16 × 12 ÷ 139 = 27.7 lbs
You're billed for 28 lbs, not 3 lbs. Right-sizing your box to 12" × 10" × 8" would give DIM weight of 7 lbs — a dramatic reduction.
Carrier Selection Guide
- USPS: Usually cheapest for packages under 2 lbs, especially to residential addresses. Flat Rate boxes offer predictable pricing regardless of weight — ideal for dense, heavy items. No DIM weight on Priority Mail packages under 1 cubic foot.
