Mental Math Shortcuts for Any Tip

Quick tip calculations without a calculator:

• 10%: Move the decimal point one place left. $74.50 → $7.45
• 15%: Find 10%, then add half. $74.50: 10% = $7.45, half = $3.73, total tip = $11.18
• 20%: Find 10% and double it. $74.50: 10% = $7.45 × 2 = $14.90
• 25%: Divide the total by 4. $74.50 ÷ 4 = $18.63

Standard US Tipping Guidelines

• Sit-down restaurants: 18–20% standard, 25%+ for excellent service, 10–15% for poor service
• Food delivery: 15–20% of order total, more in bad weather
• Bar service: $1–2 per drink for simple orders, 15–20% for cocktails or tabs
• Coffee shop (counter service): $0.50–$1 per drink, optional
• Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): 10–20%

Should You Tip on Pre-Tax or Post-Tax Amount?

Technically, tipping on the pre-tax amount is correct — tips are meant to reward service, not the government's cut. However, on most bills the difference is small. On a $60 bill with 8% tax ($64.80 total), tipping 20% on pre-tax = $12.00; tipping 20% on total = $12.96. The $0.96 difference is negligible, and tipping on the total is simpler.

International Tipping Culture

• Japan, South Korea: Tipping is considered rude and may be refused
• Australia, New Zealand: Not expected; a small round-up is appreciated for good service
• Most of Western Europe: 5–10% for good service; 20% American-style is unusual
• United Kingdom: 10–15% in sit-down restaurants; check if a service charge is already added
• Canada, Mexico: Similar to the US — 15–20% standard
