How GPA Is Calculated
GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours
Example Semester Calculation
Biology (4 credits, B+ = 3.3): 4 × 3.3 = 13.2 quality points
English (3 credits, A = 4.0): 3 × 4.0 = 12.0 quality points
Math (3 credits, A− = 3.7): 3 × 3.7 = 11.1 quality points
History (3 credits, C+ = 2.3): 3 × 2.3 = 6.9 quality points
Totals: 43.2 quality points ÷ 13 credit hours = GPA 3.32
Standard Grade Point Scale
- A+ = 4.0 | A = 4.0 | A− = 3.7
- B+ = 3.3 | B = 3.0 | B− = 2.7
- C+ = 2.3 | C = 2.0 | C− = 1.7
- D+ = 1.3 | D = 1.0 | D− = 0.7
- F = 0.0
Some institutions use a +/− system while others only use whole-letter grades. A few schools also weight honors or AP courses differently (e.g., A = 5.0 on a weighted scale). Check your school's specific scale.
GPA Requirements to Know
- Academic good standing: Most universities require a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA
- Latin honors: Cum laude typically 3.5+, Magna cum laude 3.7+, Summa cum laude 3.9+
- Graduate school: Typically requires 3.0–3.5 minimum; competitive programs expect 3.7+
- Medical school: Average accepted GPA ~3.7; most applicants who are accepted have 3.5+
- Law school (top programs): Median GPA often 3.7–3.9
- Scholarships: Most require 3.0–3.5
Why GPA Recovery Gets Harder Over Time
The more credit hours you've accumulated, the less any single semester can move your cumulative GPA. After 90 credits with a 2.8 GPA, getting to 3.5 in 30 remaining credits is mathematically impossible — you'd need above a 4.0 average. Early intervention matters disproportionately. A poor first semester follows students for their entire academic career.

Does a higher credit-hour course affect GPA more?
Yes. A 4-credit course has twice the weight of a 2-credit course in GPA calculations. An A in a 4-credit course raises your GPA more than an A in a 1-credit course. Strategically taking higher-credit courses in subjects you excel at can help improve GPA more efficiently.
Does retaking a course improve GPA?
It depends on your school's policy. Some schools replace the original grade entirely (grade forgiveness), some average both grades, and some keep both on the transcript but only count the higher grade. Check your institution's policy — grade replacement can significantly improve GPA in ways that forward-looking planning alone cannot.
